28 Years Ago Today Our Lives Changed
Every year when the first day of school arrives (now it arrives at many different times, but for us it's always the day after Labor Day) Judy and I are filled with emotions and memories.
It was 28 years ago today that we found Mickey in our bathtub after she had suffered a cardiac arrest. I can still vividly remember opening the bathroom door and seeing Mickey face down in the water. My whole world came crashing in. Screams filled the air. 911 calls were made. CPR was performed. EMT's arrived. Police arrived. The ambulance arrived. And Mickey was rushed to what is now Regions Hospital in St. Paul.
For 38 days our family kept vigil at Mickey's bedside. Friends and relatives came in and out. Strangers offered prayers and sent encouragements our way. But on October 13, 1988 at 1:15 am Mickey died.
Now Judy and I are committed to helping other moms and dads and surviving siblings deal with the death of their children. In fact, I was sending off prayer notes earlier today to a family whose daughter died on this date years ago. Yesterday it was to another family.
This past summer was our busiest year since opening Whitetail Lodge seven years ago. And like us, so many other families have experienced the first day of school without their son or daughter heading out the door.
Judy and I would ask that you pause for a moment today and remember us in prayer as well as the other families that will be facing the "first day of school" moments. Take a moment to give them a call. And if you do, mention their child by name and that you are thinking of him or her today. It will mean the world to those who have suffered loss. Thanks for caring. We love you guys. Pat & Judy
